Hackers succeed in ripping Blu-ray discs on a PS3

-----------------------------------

Not only have hackers found a way to install Fedora Linux on the PS3,<b style="color:#FFA34F"></b> including the ability to use its GUI,<b style="color:#FFA34F"></b> going by this story on gizmodo,<b style="color:#FFA34F"></b> they have succeeded in ripping a Blu-ray movie disc and PS3 game titles to the internal hard drive.<b style="color:#FFA34F"></b> <b style="color:#FFA34F"></b> While the 60GB hard drive may seem large enough for a couple of movies,<b style="color:#FFA34F"></b> let's not forget that Blu-ray titles can be as large as 50GB in size,<b style="color:#FFA34F"></b> assuming a fully filled dual-layer Blu-ray disc.<b style="color:#FFA34F"></b> <b style="color:#FFA34F"></b> The movie Talledega Night came to 20.9GB once copied across.<b style="color:#FFA34F"></b> <b style="color:#FFA34F"></b> Hackers have also succeeded in copying the contents of PS3 discs across.<b style="color:#FFA34F"></b>
<b style="color:#FFA34F"></b>
<b style="color:#FFA34F"></b>
<b style="color:#FFA34F"></b>
However,<b style="color:#FFA34F"></b> even though hackers may have succeeded in ripping the contents of a variety of PS3 game titles and Blu-ray disc movies,<b style="color:#FFA34F"></b> it will likely be some time before they figure a way of cracking the encryption.<b style="color:#FFA34F"></b> <b style="color:#FFA34F"></b> In fact,<b style="color:#FFA34F"></b> part of the reason Blu-ray has been delayed so many times was due to trying to finalise its copy protection measures,<b style="color:#FFA34F"></b> so chances are that it could be a long way yet.<b style="color:#FFA34F"></b> <b style="color:#FFA34F"></b> Even if they do succeed,<b style="color:#FFA34F"></b> new copy protection measures can be introduced on newly released Blu-ray titles that will prevent the hack from working on new titles,<b style="color:#FFA34F"></b> unlike CSS where once the system is cracked,<b style="color:#FFA34F"></b> it is broken for good.<b style="color:#FFA34F"></b> <b style="color:#FFA34F"></b> Finally,<b style="color:#FFA34F"></b> as Sony released firmware updates for its PSP to block the use of homebrew software,<b style="color:#FFA34F"></b> chances are that they will do the same for the PS3.<b style="color:#FFA34F"></b> <b style="color:#FFA34F"></b> On the other hand,<b style="color:#FFA34F"></b> even if they do,<b style="color:#FFA34F"></b> this does not mean every one out there is going to update their console.<b style="color:#FFA34F"></b>
